Forgive me if I've missed it, but there doesn't seem much comment here re a
story which has been covered several evenings on the BBC South News (we seem to get one with lots of Oxford based stories) BW have given notice to an Oxford Boatyard to leave, and there's been protests etc, BW want to develop the site for flats etc. Doesn't seem as though BW are acting in boaters interests, being more of a property development company. regards IanC |

I'd be prepared to start a petition at <http://www.petitiononline.com> and submit to BW if there's likely to be enough signatories to make it worth while. So... the noise must be towards getting more consultation with user groups, otherwise it's going to happen again and again. BW is not a private company out to make vast profits from land-deals, though that is the way they behave sometimes. They are asset stripping. BW is an administrative authority charged with the care of a public amenity. In short, they work for us [in theory]. They need reminding of this. So, I don't think boaters should just roll over on this one. We might be too late to stop this deal, but we could prevent the next, if we can find out what it is in time. Tony H |

Application was made in July 2003 (incidentally the applicant is given as "Bellway Homes Ltd/British Waterways"), and Oxford City Council refused it in May 2004. It has now gone to appeal, and (according to the Guardian last week), the public enquiry starts on the 8th March. There's also a piece in today's Daily Telegraph, playing on the Philip Pullman connection. This application for 3 story apartments was thrown out, mostly due to IWA / boaters protest. We wait for ammended plans / them going to Sec. Im not sure without looking at their accounts Tony , you could tell what they are up to until permission goes in . Where I live Warfield /Ascot area..builders will pay large retainers to land owners for years sometimes , so as to apply for permission on their land , happened to a chap I knew who owned a stables on about 15 acres , he was getting 20 grand a year on a retainer and that was in the last boom/bust cycle . I wonder how much of a retainer they {BW} are being paid for land that hasnt even been applied for planning permission yet Tony ? Regards Paul |
