Recent press release
"Whitbread PLC, The Tussauds Group and the Youth Hostel Association have joined forces to create a new kind of visitor experience for both UK and overseas visitors in what is descibed as 'Alton Towers with Bunk Beds'. YHA have sold 11.3% of its buisness in a landmark enterprise agreement with the owners of Thorpe Park, Alton Towers and Madam Tussauds. And Tussauds have just annouced that they intend to merge with Whitbread, the holding company of Premier Travel Inn - a UK wide motel buisness - to help build and operate a new 'super-hostel'. Mr Foolsmith of Whitbread said "We intend to merge the YHA buisness with Travel Inn and the powerful Alton Towers brand. We want to create a budget hostel experience with rooms themed as rollercoasters and various theme park rides. Our new flagship YHA Alton Towers will have a slide for guests to use to get to reception quickly and the lifts will be a Charlie and Choclate Factory great glass elevator simulator type ride for all the family" Whitbread will be spending around 25million pounds on a 150-bed youth hostel. For the first time in YHA history the hostel will have a swimming pool compleate with water slides. The project starts in the next couple of weeks at the Staffordshire theme park site with the first guests being welcomed in Summer 2008. A spokeman for Alton Towers said "We have had a 4 star hotel for many years, but there is a clear gap in the market for young people and families of limited means wanting a budget weekend away". Alton Towers intends to invest 5 million in new facilities, including theme park discounts of YHA guests. Mr S. Ucker said "If all goes well, we will roll out similar theme park hostels at our sister sites at Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventures in the coming years".
