Default Spanish hostels - membership required?

A friend has asked me if he needs to be a member of any organisation
to stay in a Spanish youth hostel. I've only stayed in a Spanish
hostel once, and I was a member of HI because I'm in the YHA(E&W).

Does anyone know if you do need to be a member of a national
hostelling organisation to stay in hostels in Spain?

According to http://www.iyhf.org/dba/country-ES.en.htm , "Membership
Card and Photo ID are required" for guests. So yes, in theory at
least, you need to be a member. What it's like in practice I couldn't
say.
