Just thought I'd wish everyone a merry Xmas. Hope you all have a good
holiday, anyone hostelling? Best wishes to all. |

Are any hostels actually open over Christmas? My daughter tried a few but was told they were either full (rent a hostel?) or closed. -- To reply see 'from' in headers; lose the domain, and insert dots and @ where common sense dictates. |

There's some info on Christmas opening at
http://www.yha.org.uk/Types_of_Accom..._New_Year.html though it seems mostly aimed at groups wanting to book the whole hostel. Hopefully the new look website to be launched in the new year will be able to answer such obscure and unlikely questions as "when is this hostel open?". I'm not holding my breath though. |

What my lass was looking for was somewhere she could spend an ordinary couple of nights with ordinary catering/self-catering at more or less ordinary prices. In short, she wants to escape. I'd been planning to take the tent somewhere, but she doesn't care for tenting (it's the tent itself she dislikes) and would freeze in the car - so she wondered about a hostel. Any hostels that are open seem to be assuming that their guests will still want crackers and paper hats in their escape kit. Baffling. -- To reply see 'from' in headers; lose the domain, and insert dots and @ where common sense dictates. |

A few years ago we went to an excellent family New Year break at Ilam. We even won the quiz! It was a sadly now rare New Year when everything was "deep and crisp and even". They don't seem to be doing one this year, but it was excellent, and shows what the YHA are capable of when they put their minds to it. And they had real ale on tap, which was the icing on the cake for me! Sadly when we returned home we found that our water supply had frozen solid, and we were reduced to getting buckets of water from neighbours for the next week. :-( -- Brian |

We've just got back from a 10-day visit to Holland where we based ourselves in two youth hostels - Den Haag and Haarlem. Naturally we ate and drank lots, visited art galleries, brewpubs, bars, museums, forest walks, enjoyed mussells and chips, olliebollens..... Unlike here buses even ran every 15 minutes out to Haarlem yh on Christmas Day :-) Both hostels were superb, clean, efficient, friendly - we had booked a 6-bed room in each. Booking was a doddle, which compares to today's attempt to book a yh in rip-off UK, where I eventually gave up and have decided on B&B instead John B |
