About a hundred people both locals from the village and YHA members
staying at the hostel for effectively it's last night attended a funeral service in the village high street on Saturday afternoon about 16:00. The funeral cortege was led by John Anette and other members of COPSE carrying a coffin marked up good bye Kemsing, followed by the Rev Nigel Ashworth the Kemsing village vicar and the gathered assembly. The cortege moved around the village attended by a press photographer taking pictures. (Much to the annoyance of some of the locals) The coffin was finally taken up to the hostel and prayers and hymns were sung in the common room and after the service a period of memories and reminicising was undertaken by all present who had fond memories of the hostel over the years. A meal and a party was to be held later on, a time to sing and play music and then a firework party and the coffin was to ceremoniously burned to bring the Saturday event to an end. Sunday was an opportunity to go on a walk either with June Jordan and the Kent Walk or a ramble led by Ron Smith from COPSE. Vale Kemsing, gone for good, but will not be forgotten by the members who experienced it over the years. Phil Manning (Croydon YHA Group) |

Thanks for the report, Phil. I guess there were quite a few hostels
closing this weekend, mostly with less ceremony. I was at Dolgoch - a fantastic place right out in the middle of nowhere, open fire, gas lighting downstairs, no lighting upstairs! I wouldn't want to hostel like that every weekend, but it's a real experience staying there. However, it's scheduled to go the same way as Kemsing next year, unless the Elenydd hostels trust can raise the cash to buy it. Go to http://www.elenydd-hostels.co.uk if you want to find out more or offer your support. Sorry to hijack this thread, but I want to save a hostel instead of burying it! |

Sarah and Les Brewer ( or I think or I may be having a CRAFT moment)
used to run it and also Stan and Jan Dock in the years I was involved as a member of Croydon YHA Group and lately COPSE. Working parties and Southern Regional Council meetings and travels on my motorcycle (after Rule 4 was abolished, I am not that old!! ) My brother Simon worked there for a very short while as well. When I stayed there about 7 years ago there was a couple with two young
children. I can't recall their names but they were very friendly and had done most of the interior decorating themselves. The wife in particular was very clever with a paintbrush and had done all sorts of decorative artwork around the place. Not too much, just enough to make the walls a lot less boring. At Bellingham which attracted 4 members for the last night we all rasied a
glass of champs at 8pm to thank the hostel for the many years of providing shelter and a bed for the night for over 70 years. It was George and Sheila in my day but perhaps that is showing my age. I
also recollect calor gas cylinders in the members kitchen which would somehow manage to run out at a critical moment in the cooking. I think the M25 killed Kemsing.
