I think this question was answered in a different thread a few days
back but I am on the verge of shouting at my computer! I want to find out which hostels are open next weekend - ie the New Year weekend. Using the YHA(E&W) website, do I need to click on each hostel's page and check their opening dates? I do not want an "Event", just a bed in a hostel. Bah! Can't I just use a nice simple search page to say I want to stay somewhere between Friday 29th Dec and Monday 1st Jan - and I really don't care if it's Hostel A or Hostel B? I had planned to camp (as the www.ukcampsite.co.uk website gives me all the info I need) but then thought I might fancy a couple of nights in a hostel. I reckon I'll camp if YHA don't want to share this information with me. Of course, maybe I've just not found the right button yet. Judith |

Most hostels other than city hostels are on Escape To or running packages at this time of year. HTH |

Most >hostels other than city hostels are on Escape To or running packages at this >time of year. Thanks, Tony, but that doesn't work for me. I have to choose each region - one at a time - but still don't get hostels which I think are open. For example, Ambleside and Keswick are supposed to be open 365 days a year but do not show up as available if I use http://www.yhabooking.org.uk/ Oh, I suppose that might mean that the hostel is full or, as it says on that site, they may have no online availability but be available to people who phone them. I have tried to stay at Ambleside twice in the past, as they are an "always open" hostel, but have never managed to get in. The first time they were closed for refurbishment and the 2nd time they'd had a flood (if I recall correctly)! I think I'll camp but may pop in to Keswick YH, as they are listed as being open every day of the year, and see if they have a spare bed. Booking in advance (ie more than a day) really doesn't suit me. Judith |

I think we worked out in the end that it was all 'events' and no one actually opening as a 'normal' hostel. I suppose I can't really blame wardens for wanting to have a Christmas break, but surely not all of 'em want to? -- To reply see 'from' in headers; lose the domain, and insert dots and @ where common sense dictates. |

My word, that's a useful site. Pity they don't tell anybody about it...

It would make life a lot simpler for those who just want to get away but don't really mind where to. -- To reply see 'from' in headers; lose the domain, and insert dots and @ where common sense dictates. |

The other consideration is the fact that it shows those that "currently have no on-line availability, or may be closed". In reality if it doesn't show online availability for individual beds the hostel is either closed or really is down to its last few beds. In August it could be worth ringing but outside of peak times its likely the hostel is either closed or has no availability. Still a useful tool that I used to use when hunting beds. Certainly easier and quicker than ringing around! |
