Do I have much faith in the upcoming governance review?
No. Why? The consultation paper is leading the reader to a distinct preferred solution. It is clear from the paper that nationally elected trustees are preferred via application and interview (and then short-listed for election at the National AGM, with usually 2 or 3 choices), then trustees from Regional Councils. The paper leads the reader to this conclusion. Its a fix! I can see what's coming before its even happened. I have spent the last few days putting together my response to the consultation questions and I am looking forward to the appointed Reviewer attending the Northern Regional Council AGM this coming Saturday. Its naughty to lead the reader like that, how this build ones faith in the process. The document does not look like its even been proof read before going out. On the questionnaire, question numbers 31 to 37 are simply repeats of questions 24 to 30 - a copy and paste job gone wrong. My predication? Regional Councils will lose their right to select Trustees (Board members). The paid senior managers will get their way and ensure 'their' Board is made up of 'their kind of people'. Will this make YHA 'better'? Not really sure, but I'd hate to think that the 'ordinary' man in the street won't be able to put something into YHA at a senior level. Nationally elected trustees are usually CV builders, with high level University and employment backgrounds (and there is nothing wrong with that), but the 'ordinary' man will never get a look in at the first stage - a great great shame. I want to see people on my Board who have given a lifetimes commitment to YHA, whatever shape that takes. The Board needs to be a good mix of all sorts, I do hope that happens. Karl. |
