I'm intrigued by this gem:
"Sleepers are not allowed to drive in, but the Youth Hostel Association
wardens, famous for their curries and a 30-strong wine list,..."

Curries and a wine list? At Black Sail?? Isn't it 100% self-catering?

Not when I stayed there two years ago. It *was* curry night though I don't
remember any wine on offer - just lots of beer...

<checks website>
Good grief, so they do! I was convinced it were self-catering only for
some reason. Sorry 'bout that.

Hasn't been self catering only for many a year. The warden can get there by
car, as near as damn it;-) Probably it will end up on the YHA hit list of
closures in the near future:-( Unless the LDNP or local council intervene
with grants. Maybe they do.

I didn't need to read it! I was replying to Fran actually as the top line
tells you;-)

I probably know Blacksail quite well over many years, better than a
journalist.

I note the YHA are prominently linking to the Black Sail/Ennerdale
appeal page from their home page. Kudos for that.

I also note that the aforementioned page doesn't actually say what they
intend to *do* at these two hostels. I'm a lot less inclined to part
with my hard-earned if I don't know what it's going to be spent on.

All the page says is that Black Sail is going to be "revamped". It's a
few years since I last stayed there, but I remember it being quite
nicely vamped as it was.

It means they are putting in disabled toilets - go take a look at
Longthwaite.

Excellent. There must be so many disabled people staying at Black Sail,
what with it being so handy for the buses and all...

Chris Bonnington was on the Radio 4 Today Programme this morning
talking about the project. Apparently there will eventually be no
vehicular access to Black Sail at all, not even for emergency services
(which seems a little chancy), and the hostel is to become totally
self-sufficient. There was talk of solar panels, a wind turbine and
composting toilets, but not a lot more detail. There's a page on the
BBC News site at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cumbria/6216678.stm
..

They've already been busy round the corner in Derwentwater YH. They've
installed a water turbine that's generating 40% of their electricity
(see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cumbria/6204246.stm ).
Apparently it's gonna save YHA four grand a year too.
