You would assert, Susan, that there's "more proof to the assertion," as Bill put it, Rachel Corrie "was on the side of the asshole terrorist Palestinians" than that Corrie was "murdered?" How so? You contend the "the reason the bulldozer was there in the first place was to uncover an arms-smuggling tunnel." Is there proof that Corrie was there to prevent the discovery and destruction of such tunnels rather than to protect the house of a doctor whom no one, to my knowledge, had labeled as a terrorist? I'm not aware that any evidence has surfaced that Corrie knew any such tunnel(s) opened into that house. If you know of such proof, please cite and quote it. They have always believed in the concept of an eye for an eye, and in this situation it just hasn't worked. The two peoples are of almost identical heritage genetically but each one wants it all. Both religions are most comfortable in a controlled environment ran by their religious chiefs. Pity that they can't admit that the other side has as valid a reason to exist on these grounds as the other and that perhaps both would benefit if they learned to respect and share. Perhaps the Bush people could learn by seeing that overwhelming force isn't always the best way to control the world situation. I don't think there is any credible evidence that Rachel Corrie was "on the side of the asshole terrorist Palestinians," Bill. Neither is there evidence she was a "Jew hater." There IS evidence supporting the notion Rachel Corrie believed Israel was mistreating Palestinians for reasons she would attribute to President Bush and Prime Minister Sharon. Of all I've read from her, there's not been a statement of support for terrorists and terrorism. That's to say there was not support for the killing of Israeli civilians by way of suicide bombings and sniper attacks. Corrie, of course, supported the Palestinian cause of independence from Israel and ISM's stated agenda. In fact, the Stranger's extensive article on Corrie of several months ago implies she may have adopted views consistent with anarchy. By extension, one might surmise Corrie potentially desired for Palestinians a return to life and culture such as that which existed before modern Israel came into existence as a nation -- a time when people of what would now become Palestine were then nomadic and answered to no form of government except that of the groups in which they travelled. As for being a "Jew hater:" note that ISM's members include Jews. Note also that ISM receives moral support from "refuseniks" in Israel. It might be fair to conclude, as has Susan Cohen, that Corrie was "brainwashed;" that she empathized and sympathized with what she saw as the plight of Palestinians she believed to be oppressed by Israeli intrusion into Gaza and treatment of civilians there. Certainly, many Palestinians would argue for the notion they are oppressed. If Corrie had been exposed to that argument in large measure while she had witnessed unfair treatment of Palestinians -- and some of what she described in her reports as well as other events, as in the destruction of homes that may NOT have been associated with terrorists and destruction of water wells which seemed to have no strategic value to anyone except the families who used those wells or lived in those homes along with restrictions on movement to the point where the local economy remains stifled and people experience great difficulty in obtaining the basic necessities of life, smack of oppression -- then it's logical to surmise that Corrie would develop empathy and sympathy for Palestinians. If such was her perspective, was she right to hold it? I'll not address that issue because addressing whether her perspective on the conflict between Palestinians and Israel was right or wrong is not absolutely necessary toward the goal of assessing whether Corrie was accidentally, negligently or intentionally killed as she attempted to prevent a bulldozer from doing what its "crew" was assigned to do. What counts is what happened and why it happened on March 16, 2003 in front of and in the cab of that bulldozer. That alone determines whether Corrie's death was the product of an accident, negligence or intent. The search for truth requires the courage to accept it. Unfortunately, Jews, fleeing the despicable Nazi's went out of their way to guarantee they would be hated, by acts like these. http://www.palestineremembered.com/A.../Story644.html On April 21, 1948 Weitz wrote in his diary: "Our army is steadily conquering [Palestinian] Arab villages and their inhabitants afraid and fleeing like mice. You have no idea what happened in the [Palestinian] Arab villages. It is enough that during the night several shells will whistle over them and they flee for their lives. Villages are steadily emptying, and if we continue on this course -- and we shall certainly do so as our strength increases-- then villages will empty of their inhabitants." I also made a summery of the places that have land disputes and must be settled by military means." (Expulsion Of The Palestinians, p. 186) |

Don't be ridiculous. That's true. http://www.palestineremembered.com/A.../Story644.html Weitz met Ben-Gurion in Tel Aviv on April 4 1948 and asked for audience to discuss the : "question of evacuating/clearing out the [Palestinian] Arabs. ... [ten days later] [we] must direct our war towards the removal of as many Arabs as possible from boundaries of out state. The guarding of their property after their removal is a secondary question, [Weitz recorded] Finally it was agreed that I would submit a proposal for [Palestinian Arab] removal from localities based on my considerations." The simple truth was that Palestine was not an empty land, and the Jews were only a small minority of its population. In the days of the empire building, the Western powers had dismissed natives as an inconsequential factor in determining whether or not to settle a territory with immigrants. Even after the [1st] world war, the concept of self-determination . . . . was still reserved exclusively for the developed world." (Michael Bar-Zohar, p. 45-46) |

Yes, this is pretty much what I believe. When I say she was siding with terrorists, I don't think that this is what she set out to do. I'll admit the terrorist groups (not all Palestinians are terrorists, not all Jews are Zionists) are sickening because they kill civilians. Our military kills civilians. The Israeli military kills civilians. Your attempts at moral equivalency will fail here because there is no such thing. Sucicide missions are no problem so long as civilians are not involved. Just because its not traditional, conventional western warfare it doesn't mean its wrong. Of course, you'd have the Palestinians chucking rocks at the American-made Israeli tanks.
