New campaign to improve water quality of the Chesapeake Bay is cute but
fails badly because it omits the SOD program. For years the exstension agents all across the Commonwealth preached this program as the only way to have a beautiful yard. How many millions of dollars over the years have been spent promoting it and yet it was ignored by the "save the crab" crowd. S O D stands for September, October and December and those are the months one fertilizes the lawn at a rate of one pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet. The recommended fertilizer is 10-10-10. During the other months only lime is recommended for your lawn. This method works well. Now if the General Assembly trully wants to help improve the water quality of the Chesapeake they should mandate the S O D program be used by both commercial landscapers and home owners. Just like the localites impose water usage guidelines when needed, they should impose S O D if the General Assembly won't. |
