Default Lake Powell houseboating

In a couple of weeks my wife and I will be renting a 36' standard class
houseboat for 4 days on Lake Powell. We're flying into Page City and we
will have to stock up on food and supplies when we arrive. We've never done
this before and we would appreciate any advice.

I've done it plenty. It takes some work to make it enjoyable. Pay
attention to the anchoring instructions. Get a tow along so that you can
explore from that once you find a nice beach. We used to go to West
Canyon from there. Far enough to be away but not a full days trip. With
the water so low who knows what's good now though. Try to do your
paperwork the night before and get there early the morning of departure
so you can get out. If you get in the end of the line you can spend much
of your first day in the office. From West Canyon it was a nice boat
trip (ski boat) up to Dangling Rope to re-stock ice and get an ice cream
cone after a couple of days.

Also be very carefull with the houseboat that you are on. many people have
died from carbon monoxide because the boat wasnt retrofitted with a newer
exaust system. The rear of the boat where one swims off of can collect
monoxide under its back. Ask the rental place if their boats have updated
exaust systems and dont rent from then if they dont know what the hell you are
asking.

Lake powell is a fantastic adventure. But you better bring your tool kit
because ARA boats, at least in my experiences are poorly maintained. Our
last adventure , the steering linkage fell out down by rainbow bridge. More
than half of our rentals had mechanical failures. If you are prepared for
this , it's still alot of fun. Be prepared for 100+ temperatures too! There
is better scenery up past Dangling Rope marina, but that might be a bit to
far to go in 4 days.
