Default water pumping

i have just put my outboard (mercury 500) back together, after
removing the exhaust plate to clear the pipes of corrosion, as the
water flow was very slow. It started first time, which i was very
pleased about, but the water flow is worse than before, the only thing
i can think of is that the water pump is missing a couple of seals,
going to the water pipe and the drive shaft, would this be reducing
the pressure of the water so much that it would not pump water round
the engine properly? i have run out of ideas, and any input would be
grately appreciated.

p.s. i have attatched the garden hose directly to the water pipe and
water pumps out the the exhaust and tell tale fine, so the problem
must be around the pump.

thanks a lot

Just a guess (as I do not know that engine):

Is the impeller slipping on its shaft?

If replaced, does it run in the correct direction or can it be mounted
the wrong way?

Can the water short circuit, meaning running directly from the high
pressures side back to the low pressure side past the impeller?

With best regards,
Uwe

hi, thanks for the reply, i have put the engine in a tank today,
instead of just using the muffs, it was pumping then, i dont know if
this means that the pump is working but not very well, should water
come out of the tell tale with muffs? (they are a bit perished) i dont
think the impeller can slip, but it does seem to be very tight in the
pump, and quite hard to turn by hand, is this normal? i have checked
that it is placed the right way, which it is, and it cant bypass the
impeller. thanks a lot for the help it is much appreciated.

Patrick!

I have seen this before when using muffs.
I think in this case ist still a bit air in the pump reducing the pump
performance so I personally prefer using the tank for testing.
In my personal opinion the telltale must wurk when the motor ist fast
idling in a reasonable large tank (like a 200 l barrel).
If it does not work then, there is still a sereous problem.

With best regards,
Uwe
