Default Hand held GPS

I need to buy a new Handheld GPS for my sailing boat, does anyone have one
to recommend. I have a Garmin 126/128 Marine Navigator fitted to the yacht.

I have a Garmin 72. It works fine on the boat but if you ever want to
use it elsewhere I cannot recommend the 72. It loses track of
satellites very easily indeed, and particularly dislikes not being
flat.

I have a basic Garmin 76 which works well.

I too have a Garmin GPS76 which is fantastic. It has off course and anchor
drag alarms and a big memory.
Highly reccommended. I've also droped it a few times and it still works
fine. A set of Duracell batteries
last almost a week, sailing just during daylight hours with the set on most
of the time.

No recommendations, just experiences:
I have had a Garmin 48 for a decade that's still going strong, and acquires
satellites quicker than my Garmin eTrex. The eTrex is great because I can
download street maps and charts to it. Both are supposed to be waterproof,
and power consumption is acceptable.

If you want to drive a charting application, then factor in the cost of an
interface cable.

Anybody care to say what would be best, a 76CSx or Etrex Venture CX? I'm
thinking of buying one of these, with a memory card with the chart (S North
Sea) already on it. There's more than a £100 difference in price, but what
more do you get for the 76Csx?

You get a handheld GPS which has the screen at the bottom, below the
controls, which makes it awkward to handle using one hand, sailors often
need to do this.

Buy the GPSMAP60CSx, which has the screen at the top, and has the same
software as the 76Csx, and gives you the same charts on deck as you can have
on your laptop below decks.

If you don't want to display charts, the 60CSx is a better bet than the
76CSx.

I initially hated the bottom screen on my garmin gps12 until I got used to
it and eventually realised that it ensured a proper grasp of the instrument
whilst on the rail getting dunked. I did learn to use it single-handed.
Although long in the tooth now battery hungry and slower than some it has
proved reliable durable and waterproof over the many years I have used it
and still going strong.

I have a Garmin 60csx in the car with the automotive pack which assists me
to navigate round europe.

I also have a Garmin 60csx on my boat with a 2 gig chip which holds the
entire Garmin Bluechart series (the charts cost me more than both GPS'
together!)

My point is they both work perfectly, I have used both on land and sea from
sailing in Greece to navigating around Minefields in Afghanistan & Iraq and
they have never let me down.

Just wish the charts were cheaper!

Forgot to add if you like using the 'Rolling Road' this is not set as
default but is easily changed.

In 'flat' you mean being held horizontal?
Not 'flat' (fully discharged) as in battery?
Just nit-picking!
Recently a young acquaintance told of a car mounted GPS w.dashboard
mounted display, that acted up in the vicinity of Cape Race
Newfoundland; which is a pretty remote place!
Wondering if the LF Loran which AFIK still operates was swamping it
with strong signals. But there is such a difference in the frequencies
used it seems unlikely?

I have (only) one Garmin GPSmap 60C (the original version I think). It has
served me well so far. I have no experience of mine fields though.

I'm a bit dissapointed that the 76sx/csx does not have the ability to
record the barometer while off (like the 60 does). For this reason I'd
tend to stick with the 60 series. I think it's quite nice having a
barometric graph - more so for me now that my old wall barometer (as
nice as it looks) has died.
