Default Furling jib gear

It is time to replace our jib furling/reefing gear, after years of
patching up a Hood system. This is on a 25 year old 28 footer.

The question is, what do we get? Is there much advantage with a tack
swivel? Is there much advantage in getting anything more expensive
than Plastimo?

Comments and recommendations will be welcome.

Thanks

Ian

I have a 21 years old Sailspar system that I expect to out last me. I guess it
depends on your age.

I recall that you are an owner and fan of sailspar. At 21 years, I
think it has done better than the, probably more expensive, Hood. Both
are continuous line but the sailspar actually works, by all accounts.

I guess that I am not far behind you and 21 years will prolly see the
boat out if not me (although we do have an active dinghy sailor at
about 85, and still at the front of the fleet in the right
conditions).

At the time I bought it was the cheapest available and I think Hood's was the
most expensive. In the meantime Sailspar has caught up with if not overtaken
Hood prices.

In our harbour there was a guy of 75, who sailed his Centaur single handed most
days. Last year he bought new sails etc., but didn't reappear after the winter.

That's a shame. Hopefully, he did the Arc and is still out in the
Caribbean. That's what he got the new sails for.

Bought a Furlex last year for my 34 ft Dehler, having looked at all the
options.
Excellent build quality and reliable.

Crusader were able to offer a wide range of RR systems from cheaper than
Plastimo to much more expensive than Furlex.

In the end I bought a new sail and Furlex from Kemp Sails as a winter
package.

Only comment I would have is that the reefing line supplied is quite a small
diameter and you need to think how it can be controlled in a blow. Will it
hold in the jam cleat or hold in the jaws of the self tailer.

Regards

Bob
