I see the meja pundits are starting to ask whether the Fastnet Race should
have been held back until after the gale. Personally I feel the organisers did the right thing, so it seems do most of the competitors who have been interviewed. I do hope that sailing remains something where some risk is allowed, even if we try to manage it as safely as possible. The world is becoming too damned bland.

If people like the idea of racing that's great. If they don't fancy it then they can DNS or DNF and that's great too. The large number of retirements this year suggests people don't feel under undue pressure to race if they don't fancy it. Mind you, I've checked on a few boats I know and I find myself asking the question how are they making such good progress W into a strong SW wind. 40+ knots of wind and a big sea stops anything I've ever sailed like a brick wall. |

That could lead to eye strain and possible electrocution. Also you might fall over it and break a leg. It should be banned on H&S grounds, or at least made subject to training and certification. What worries me most is that statistically more people die in bed than anywhere else, so clearly that should be banned. |
