Default Day Skipper Theoretical Exam - Where?

Hi all,

I wonder if it is possible to do just the exam instead of a complete 5
day theory course. The RYA website seems to show only courses, no exams.

Does anybody here know if that is possible? And where to go? I live in
Reading, closest port is Southampton.

Afraid it's not possible. The course is assessed on

Atendance
Coursework
Exams

the thinking being that the course covers more than can be assessed in few
hours - which it does. If you feel you know it all you can do the DS
Practical without having a theory certificate. If you have a good grasp of
DS theory why not look at a Yachtmaster theory course?

Cool. I will check if I can do it together with a friend. The CD of this
particular company is Windows only?

I checked their website, nothing close to Reading. But the
correspondence courses look very interesting

No, it has both Windows and Mac setup option.

However, there's nothing for Linux, HP-UX, BSD, OS/2, DOS, CP/M, VMS,
TOPS-10 or 20 etc etc that I can see. So you'll need to put your old PDP-11
or VAX cluster and teletypes aside, I'm afraid... :-)

There is no stand-alone exam for day skipper shorebased as this level is not
really a formal qualification. The certificate of course completion is
awarded after attending a course which lasts for at least 40 hours teaching
time.

At the end of the course there are assessment papers to check that you have
retained the information which was tought during the course.

There are a number of options to attend the day skipper course as follows -

1. Evening classes at a local LEA
2. intensive course (5 days) at a sea school
3. series of weekend courses at a sea school
4. correspondance course.

There used to be a good team of trainers at the LEA in Reading. The lead
instructor was Mike Bowyer. For further local info on whats availble google
"Reading Offshore Club" This is a well established club which started by a
group of students going to the pub following a night school sailing course
in reading!
