I am searching for a type of galvanised chain stopper or mooring bitts
which used to be available - I bought one from Thomas Foulkes in the early 80's. They were made from two lengths of shaped steel angle iron welded onto a square base which was bolted through the foredeck. When hauling chain in, the chain could be dropped between the two pieces of angle between pulls. There is a diagram in Ian Nicholson's "Marinize your Boat." My current boat has a small stainless chain stopper with a sort of pawl, such as one can buy anywhere, and it's just not in the same league of functionality. Any suggestions, please? Thanks. |

I always just drop the chain onto the windlass gypsy when I need a breather between pulls. Don't have a windlass? Dear oh dear, how do you manage? :-) Never mind. You must have some sort of samson post or big cleat to which to attach the cahin while actually anchored. Can't you just take a quick turn around that? It doesn't need much to take the bulk of the strain, there is no need to wrap it round and round. You can then just stand on the tail end while you rest. |

Why not have a chain hook on a short strop and drop that on to the chain when you want a breather/ |
