Default Back from the Ionian

Just returned from Corfu, Gouvia. We had a great two weeks sailing around Corfu, Paxos and Mourtos on the mainland. No sign of the bush fires where we were, but the temperature was in the 40s.
There seem to be no quiet spots left at all in the Northern Ionian, but it was the high season after all. Bernitses and Petriti were by far our favourite spots, but even then, not all that quiet at night.
I still think that Ithaca and the south is better.

I'm just jealous. Seriously, glad you enjoyed it. I love the islands but I
think the mainland doesn't have quite as much character.
I suppose in high season it is going to be a bit busy, there are so many
flotilla and bareboat companies operating in the area
it'll never be quiet again. But, it is good sailing and provisions are easy
to come by so I guess you take the rough with the smooth.

Would you go again or try somewhere else?

We are getting a bit old, wife and I, so if we do go again, we will probably
go over to a large motorboat with roomy cabin, airconditioning and a huge
fridge...climbing about a 32 foot sailing boat is a bit tricky nowadays!
Might try Turkey or the other Greek Islands. The Greek people were
wonderful.

I've heard Turkey is even better, but Sailing Holidays don't go there so
it'll be a more expensive company like Sunsail.

I'm quite keen to try the bareboat experience, we found the pace of
flotillas a little hectic. It would be nice to find a favourite spot and
stay there for a few days.

I'm off to the Aegian on Saturday with Neilsens - a Dufour 34 for a
fortnight, based in Porto Heli, Peloponnese.

Fortunately the forest fires are miles away..

It's actually 2 x 1 week flotillas, the first week taking in the Argolic
Gulf and the second week the Methana Peninsular. Both include a days
freesail but I'm inclined to buzz off for a few days and do our own
thing during the weekend changeover. That presumes we won't need to
refuel.

If you're interested Neilsens publish both weekly itineraries on their
website. And it's cheap - based per person rather than per boat - a
fortnight is about 700 sovs each including flight.

I'm hoping for a sight more wind than we experienced in the Ionian last
year. And a bit better luck with my lobster pots!

I'll report back if anyone's interested.

I had the Dufour 32 last year and liked it a lot.
Neilsons also do bareboating at flotilla prices which is great
if only two of you want to go. Their new
service from Stanstead at the civilised flight time of about
11.00 makes them high on the list. They are not quite as
cheap as Sailing Holidays but the extra sounds worth it.
