I think this has happened eight times before.
1956 Jean Behra led after 1st, 2nd & 3rd events 1962 Phil Hill 2nd 1963 Bruce McLaren 2nd 1966 Lorenzo Bandini 2nd 1974 Clay Regazzoni 2nd, 3rd & 4th 1983 Niki Lauda 2nd 1985 Michele Alboreto 2nd 1989 Alain Prost 2nd & 3rd 2007 Lewis Hamilton 3rd & 4th All except Behra and Hamilton had previous Championship GP wins to their names - Hill (3), McLaren (3), Bandini (1), Regazzoni (1), Lauda (19), Alboreto (3), & Prost (35). If anyone missed the post-race Press Conference - Hamilton is the youngest WDC leader ever, beating the previous record set by Bruce McLaren in 1960. McLaren was 22y 161d old. Hamilton was 22y 098d old when he shared the lead in Bahrain and 22y 126d old today. -- Brian W Lawrence Wantage, Oxfordshire, UK Brian_W_Lawrence@msn.com |

No, he finished second. Fangio won the race by taking over team-mate Musso's car so they shared the points (4 each with Fangio getting one point for fastest lap). Behra consolidated his lead by finishing 3rd at Monaco (Moss won there, scoring his first points of the season). The third event was the Indy 500 which didn't impact on Behra's championship lead. Behra never achieved a championship GP win. -- Brian |

Behra never achieved a championship GP win. OK, cheers, I just didn't understand how he could have been in the lead without winning. I forgot that they used to share the cars back then, but even then I didn't know they shared the points at all. -- Andy Hewitt <http://web.mac.com/andrewhewitt1/> |
