I've been watching F1 for 20 years: This isn't an achievement, I'm just
starting to get old! Does anyone else get the feeling that Lewis Hamilton is going to turn out to be the best driver in the sport's history? It just doesn't feel right to be thinking like that - rather like the announcement BAR made before their first season that they would win their first race: But I just can't get the thought out of my head. There are currently two teams and four drivers at the top - all great drivers. Taking LH's achievements in this context makes him look even better. In the Senna/Prost/Mansell days, the stunning driving of each of them (Senna and Prost in particular) was great to see, but not one of them dominated overall in points and wins, because there was always another great driver to take points away from them. Contrast with MS: Although he always acheived a lot, the big slices he took out of the number-of-wins record (for example) were achieved when he was the only decent driver in a decent car. You've only got to remove Ferrari or Alonso from the mix this year for LH to have won a race already. Project this over a 10-15 year career (and allow for his current rookie status), and it's difficult to see how he's not going to totally dominate and smash every record going. Of course, he could follow in the footsteps of Jenson Button, and sign for the worse team going. -- Regards, Dave email: dave_ryman@hotmailNOSPAM.com My Homepage: http://homepages.tesco.net/david.ryman/ The F1 travel guide: http://www.zdp06.ukgateway.net/f1_travel.htm |

Or follow in the other footsteps of Jenson Button and forget he's an F1 driver in his second season. The test will come when he's in a mediocre car (after all, every team turns them out now and again). MS and Alonso have both shown the ability to drive round problems on cars, Button demonstrated quite clearly that he couldn't. -- Mike Fleming |
