Of all the test matches I wanted to follow to finally grasp cricket, I had
to decide on this one. Mind you, I do think it was the best possible choice, but how can this ever be bested? Thank you England and Australia, you've made another convert! Bas |

I suggest that there will be lots of converts and in that the future of English cricket will prosper from the new recruits! It has come home, it has come home, the Ashes have come home!!!!!!!!!! Spare a thought for those of us who started following English cricket in the 1990s, and had known nothing but failure. I've got a copy of the official BBC programme for The Ashes 93 sitting beside me, with Chris Lewis on the cover, and an assertion inside that 'Spinners Won't Be Winners' (Vic Marks). Although it does have a feature elsewhere exploring the potential rivalry between the opposing legspinners, Ian Salisbury and Shane Warne ('Bring on the Magic Men', Simon Barnes). Ian Salisbury Age: 23 First-class wkts: 219 Average: 38.94 Best: 7-54 No of Tests: 4 Test wkts: 8 Test average: 67.00 Test best: 3-49 Shane Warne Age: 23 First-class wkts: 81 Average: 32.59 Best: 7-49 No of Tests: 11 Test wkts: 31 Test average: 30.80 Test best: 7-52 Statistics do not include this season Richie writes... Providing he is fit, it seems likely Shane Warne could play a lively part in the summer's six Tests. He might also play a part in matches against the counties, where it is important that the touring side gets through its games in the quickest time. In those two sentences there is one 'likely', one 'could', one 'seems' and a 'might'. If that appears to indicate a lack of confidence - not so! I have a great deal of time for Warne: he's one of the most promising young spin bowlers Australia has produced in a long time. The danger is that everyone will expect far too much of him on his first tour of England. Covered pitches are a help, and so is his temperament. He is confident but not brash, attacking but not insensitive to the need to attend to the fundamentals of his art. -- Cheers, ymt. |

Thought he had his contract terminated last season. Still - to be fair he was an OK bowler. for someone who couldn't turn the ball. Or hit the pitch with it half the time. Come to think of it - he was cak. |

Nope, though he hasn't played much for the Surrey 1st XI this season. He missed the early part of the season through injury, and when he returned had fallen behind Harbhajan Singh (though he was only available for about 3 Championship games) and Nayan Doshi in the pecking order. And now Surrey have Saqlain Mushtaq back after his long injury lay-off. Salisbury has been captaining the Seconds recently and doing well for them. -- John Hall "Home is heaven and orgies are vile, But you *need* an orgy, once in a while." Ogden Nash (1902-1971) |

Very generous guy - always usually gave a shorter-pitched 4 ball every over! Richard |
