He played well, he is a good batsman - but that has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not his nationality qualifies him to play for England. |

RH But isn't your argument against white mercenaries that they will be insufficiently motivated and therefore won't perform well, especially when the chips are down? Don't today's events rather blow that theory out of the water? -- John Hall "Home is heaven and orgies are vile, But you *need* an orgy, once in a while." Ogden Nash (1902-1971) |

Don't today's events rather blow that theory > out of the water? As you've probably noticed, whenever a "white mercenary"* does badly for England, he uses it as evidence for his (stupid) theory; whenever one does well**, he claims that performances are irrelevant, and that such players simply should not be picked because of who they are. If he stuck to this latter view (of white mercenaries - it would, of course, still be obnoxious if espoused re, say, Hussain or Mahmood), he'd be deserving of some respect. As it is, there's no point in arguing with him. *Or indeed a Welshman, or a British member of an ethnic minority. **This has to be pretty remarkably and consistently well, or he'll just dismiss it as lucky, or a freak performance amid many poor ones. Incidentally, I read somewhere the other day that Craig White* (who was of course born in England) always regarded himself as English and supported England while growing up in Australia, and was much teased as a result. Which shows how ridiculous RH's belief that these things are somehow cut- and-dried, and that Cowdrey, Dexter, Strauss etc. are clearly English while White clearly isn't. *I'm pretty sure it was White - certainly someone that RH would regard as beyond the pale. |
