Hello Gabrielle....You seem like a genuinely nice person, so I'm going
to make some polite suggestions about your webpage.

I'm a webdesigner, and would be happy to develop your homepage so that
it has a more modern look. For free.

Here's some suggestions:

(1) Use of subtle colors, rather than overpowering ones. The page
needs to have the colors increase in luminosity (more white) and
diminish in saturation (less hot pink);

(2) A left-side javascripted menu that not only highlights the choice
by passing over it with a mouse, but also changes pictures and topics
on the page;

(3) Nested tables, to give the page a 'modern magazine' feel.

(4) A more elegant font choice, such as Palatino or Garabond.

These four simply choices will transform your page into a shining
example of web professionalism. By and large, all other changes occur
in the background, such as a searchable database and RSS feeds.

Hi Zinc, care to cast an eye over my own humble site?

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ian.bradley4/index.htm

It's an amateurish first attempt thrown together with Frontpage, and
consisting of a few Xara Webstyle 3 components, such as the heading
and navbars, (yes I know the navbars are crap but I quite liked them
at the time)

I'm entirely self taught and I haven't a clue about html or Java, I also
wouldn't know a nested table if it jumped up and hit me, but I'm
open to suggestions. Even if it does mean heading down the road to clean and
professional luminosity rather than the path of the funky blue background
and colourful, if clumsy navbars

Ian.

Good basic design. You've remembered the rule about contrasting
foreground and background. White lettering works on deep blue, it's
one of the reasons that people like blueprints.

Nested tables are necessary for clean, magazine-style layout. They
give the same result on all browsers, which is more than you can hope
for with advanced style sheets.

The navbars are okay, then only thing is to group them tightly, and
use the width of the page as well as the lenght.

If at all possible, the front page of any site shouldn't require
scrolling on 1024 by 768 resolution; but you'd be surprised how many
big-time sites ignore that rule.

I'm going to be uploading a new version of Gea's page tonight; more on
that later.

Hello Ian...

Well, this whole discussion got me so excited that I brushed off some
old code from 2001 and put in on a free hosting service. I hope Gea
doesn't mind!

You can see a very simple page of mine here:

http://blake.prohosting.com/duji/index.html

Everything is contained on the one page; all the styles are "inline".
I'm purposely keeping this one as simple as possible; however there
are some subtle tricks. The background picture is sliced into three,
and is the bottom layer of the style. The other menus, pictures and
links are on differing layers of the page. The advantage of this
style-sheet approach is that one has pixel-by-pixel control of the
visual objects.

This became a necessity because the free hosting service inserts its
own code into the page; that's free for you.

I toyed with white or a pastel shade but I must admit to a fondness for
an unobtrusive background. Though as it's a psychic related site aren't
I legally obliged to have it all in instant migraine inducing, clashing
colours?

(Note to self, go look up nested tables and style sheets)

I've put the two together now, with the heading below them.

I did initially intend to have the site map section separate, but I thought
that at least visitors might actually see it as it's part of the home page,
many people might not even bother clicking on a link otherwise, unless they
were
serious about delving into the site's facets.

It looks quite clean that way without the intrusion of the hosting
additions.
I'm still unclear about the style-sheets though, in a very basic sense, what
are they, and what's the benefit of layers compared with the way I have
everything just sitting on a basic background?

Simple. If you download the page, or do a "View Source" on your
browser, you'll notice that Gea's picture and her introductory phrase
are in different layers. If that wasn't so, her face wouldn't be
superimposed on the words, and they would be quite separate. Style
sheets allow one to do layout; to treat each picture or phrase as if
written on a scrap of paper, and they can be moved around the page
pixel-by-pixel. At that point, one can design a webpage the same way
one does a paper page.

As an added bonus, the following does exactly the same thing.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ian.bradley4/

The index.html is assumed by most if not all browsers..the htm appendage
is a plot by microsoft to make everyone conform to THEIR view of the

There, NOW I feel better...

I have you beat hands down in that regard. I don't have a clue in MANY
MANY more things than you, but being a humble sort, don't mention it too
often. Please don't interpret this as bragging or preening...it's just a
fact.

I was somewhat reticent about revealing the site to a greater audience
due to the obvious disappointment it would cause among the psychic
community.
After all, what psychic related site that wishes to be taken at all
seriously,
doesn't have a clashing text / background combination, garish graphics
and no muffled, cheesy soundtrack to irritate the browser?

I must hereby apologise for these glaring omissions but in a humble effort
to redeem myself in the eyes of my peers, I did at least include a silly
animated gif on the links page, and I hope to be adding a plethora of low
quality angel graphics ASAP.

Hello everyone...

I've just updated Gea's page to include disjoint rollovers. If you
slide your mouse across the menu at left, it makes the lens color
change on the right. This is just a mockup, of course. The real page
would have pictures replacing the colored lenses.

Feel free to steal the code; it's thoroughly commented.
