Motion for injunction targets Richt Former cheerleading coach wants reinstatement By ANDREA JONES Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 10/15/04 Former UGA cheerleading coach Marilou Braswell filed a motion for an injunction in federal court Thursday, saying that the school's non-discrimination policy was too "vague" and that Mark Richt, the school's football coach, was never reprimanded for sharing his Christian beliefs. Braswell, who was fired in August for reading a letter explaining why a Jewish cheerleader who filed a religious complaint against her was allowed on the squad without a tryout, wants to be reinstated immediately. The motion cites examples of how Richt also talked about Christianity without any action from the school. Braswell filed a civil rights lawsuit last month. The suit, which also names UGA President Michael Adams, Athletics Director Damon Evans and Senior Associate Athletics Director Frank Crumley as defendants, claims Braswell's religious freedom and civil rights were violated by her termination. She had been placed on a year of probation after cheerleader Jaclyn Steele accused her of favoring Christian students. Attorneys for UGA did not return a call seeking comment Thursday. © 2004 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution -- LP "We are fighting today for security, for progress, and for peace, not only for ourselves but for all men, not only for one generation but for all generations.
