All the posts and threads before the 10th January have disappeared. I'm
using OE as my newsreader but it hasn't happened to any of the other groups that I subscribe to so I doubt it's my newsreader. Is there a moderator in here that's been doing some spring cleaning? Just interested, nothing to do with detecting but certainly On-Topic (boy, that statement would cause a massive fight in uk.local.surrey or I-O-W lol )! -- Mark Jones AML. |

Hi Mark,
I've still got them going right back, so it must be your newsreader. Perhaps they delete certain groups more than others ?!?! Jim PS Found anything lately ? |

My OE does the same thing , sometimes unsubscribing and the re - subscribing brings up the old messages. Phil |

Nope, not taken the "fad" further than lurking in here due to other things and the lack of a Metal Detector Shop in Addlestone area. Will get around to shopping as and when my clients pay their bills on time, even a £100 toy would be considered as unnecessay by my wife at the moment. I could really do with taking it up again in order to get me out in the fresh air again rather than sitting on my fat arse in my study. Strange about the Newsreaders, I wish it would "clean" up some of the busier ng's - such as uk.local.kent - I have 2044 unread messages and I'm sure I clicked "catch up" only a week ago (but then those Kents do use it like a chat room don't they - just like I'm doing right now I suppose). Where were those shops again and what sort of "starter kit" brands should I look for and avoid? Any idea on budget. I don't expect to find Bullion but I don't want to find gun shot or ring pulls either. Mark |

I'm sure I was conceived in the Otter Pub Garden or Car Park in 1966. It's been a local of mine through the 80's & 90's but it really is just a Harvester now. When it first became a Harvester it was a Pub with a Restaurant but eventually they pushed the locals out, got their way and added more restaurant seats so now it's a Restaurant with a waiting area Bar. |

Christ Mark,
We must have been passing acquaintances in the late 70's early 80's... I spent many nights fighting to get to the bar in the Otter ! Like you say, restaurant to the left, pub to the right with ample seating in the pub bit ! It's all ruined now. Both the Otter and Halfway House in Walton used to be great dimly lit pubs with the customer in mind, not like todays brawling houses... As for detecting, try to see what you can get in White's, Minelab, Fisher, C-Scope, Laser or Bounty Hunter (mainly USA models). Obviously the more you spend, the more you get, but all will still find ring pulls and percussion caps. Some of the better technology will now null out iron to a good extent, so you wont dig much junk, but some are better than others. If you fancy joining a club, I recommend the Weekend Wanderers, as they will be holding a lot of Surrey digs this year. Regards Jim |

Sorry mate, I'm not your dad! :-))) I started going there about about 70/71 I can remember Chobham Common when the army was still using bits of it (before M3). We used to go scavenging for the 2 inch mortar flares with the little parachutes on and 7.62 rifle rounds. Used to pick up cap badges and rifle magazines that had been dropped. Them wuz the days!!
