Hi
The cartridge you describe is a Pin fire cartridge. I have dug up quite
a few now. Try doing a search for pin fire or 12 bore pin fire cartridge

Rimfire cartridges (and bullets) do not have either
a pin protruding or a central cap in the base.
That type is called a pinfire.
Rimfire ammunition is detonated by the firing pin hitting anywhere
in the area of the base of the cartridge/bullet.
The smaller bore bullets (0.22) are usually rimfire
as it was found impractical to fit percussion caps in
these smaller bases.

I think i may have mis-quoted his reference to the rimfire cartridge, he
probably did say pinfire...
I've found references to pinfire but nothing on pinfire 12 bore cartridges,
it would be nice to put a rough date to it...
cheers...Andre
