New to the hobby. How do I find out who owns land?

Just starting out...and rather than pick a likely looking field and knock on
the door of the nearest farm house, if I have a certain area in mind (which
I do), how do I find out who owns it? Is it just a matter of asking around
until I find out? And what's the position regarding land owned by the
national trust? A complete non-starter, or subject to individual
conditions?

All help appreciated - yes, I've read the code of conduct, which is why I'm
asking this in advance rather than just shoving the kit in the boot of the
car and heading off!

I asked the National Trust for access to one of the beaches and there was no
problem as long as I kept off the dunes. I asked them in the same letter
about access to their land and was told under no circumstances could i go
landward. you might have better luck in your area though.

I understood that the area of beach or foreshore between the high and low
tide levels belonged to the Crown. In which case the NT can neither allow
nor deny you permission . . .

Quite true, but they pull clever stunts like classing the beach as a nature
reserve.
This effectively makes it impossible to dig anything up.

Try telling that to every 5 year old with a bucket and spade though !
