An interesting point from one of the yanks was that why did they feel geeky or
stupid when tecting. I agreed and have to be honest. There is a stigma attached and my family and friends take the piss quite often. Who else feels this way and be honest. Its ok with a group or for you seasoned tectorists but i`m quite new and fell a right twat sometimes. I cant wait for dark nights so i can go out and fumble in the ploughed and enjoy myself. I enjoy it so much but i hate it when people see me especially with monster headphones on and a frickin spade in me other hand. All i need is the bunny ears and my knob out to compliment my attire. How many others have not been posting finds recently. Could this be the honest reason. Steve |

Subject: Looking stupid
From: jchristman@removethishotpop.com Date: 23/09/2003 00:00 GMT Daylight Time Message-id: <3f6f7ea3.118709432@news.seniorglobe.org> I often wish I had more nerve to go out metal detecting as often as I feel like it but to be honest I don't like looking stupid. Why is there such a stigma placed on people who metal detect? It's not that loser of a thing to do, its fun, exercise etc... Any secrets to getting around this personal problem of mine? I'm not that vain, really, just hate looking like a dork. |

I don't really care less what people think. If more youngsters took it
up there could be a lot less crime about. I'd go detecting with my wife's best suspenders on, a peek a boo bra and a Noddy hat and wouldn't care less. Not that I'm into that sort of thing mind you. What does it matter what people think. Stuff them if they have time to bother about what you do instead of doing something enjoyable, sometimes exciting, relaxing, beneficial to our history, even prosperous if you find some real goodies. Im the opposite Rev. I also feel a tit when someone takes notice. I dont
wear the big ear muffs partly for this reason. I know when I go out that if im dressed like Rambo people assume im there illegally. Therefore I learnt to dress decently while im out, gel the hair, keep the trousers relatively clean and basically look as though im relatively respectable. Im a quiet guy at the best of times so if someone does approach me while im in the middle of nowhere I usually cack my pants and keep my spade close by. Everyone knows im a sad metal detectorist, the neighbours see me putting it in the car, my MD hangs on my wall at home like a shotgun over the fireplace syle. I even take my finds into work to show the lads. They call me a sad bast@rd but while im out digging they are sat at home with the TV. Who has the bigger chance of making it big? And one more thing if we are being totally honest, ive never had the guts to knock on a farmers door to ask permission in my 4 years Mding. Theres been a few times where Ive had nowhere to search so didnt get to go out. Then I realised the hunt for somewhere to search is as interesting as the search itself. My MD trips now are sometimes an all day job with backpack, sarnies, GPS, map and a 5 mile hike but I still love it.
