My first post to this group, first of many I think. I want to take up
this pastime and have £300 to spend on a detector. Which, in your
expert opinion, is the best model to buy? I'll be hunting on land
mainly, with some beach work occasionally.

Kind regards

In my opinion a Minelab Sovereign XS2A pro. But then they are unusually
heavy unless you are pretty fit.. Ive head good things about Laser Rapiers
and Red Heats which are in that price range. Anything from one of the main
brands is fine, not something off Ebay thats detects uptro 30ft down and all
that crapola.

Please, please do not go out and buy a Tandy or something from Woolies that
look like an electronic walking stick. Do not buy any of the Chinese tat
that is flooding the pages of E Bay unless you want to find old gate hinges
and horse shoes, there really are some awful piles of plastic being touted
on E Bay that I would be embarrassed to give to my 8 year old
I would plump for a nearly new detector that would retail at the £450 - £500
range but available at £300 second hand.
I agree with the last poster about the Laser Rapier, I have one as a back up
machine and they are delightful to use....and easy too. The Rapier is great
on dry sand and farmland but like most detectors would struggle on salt-wet
sand due to mineralisation.
The Rapier excels on Roman sites and will find you hammered with ease. It
might not be as sophisticated as the Explorer II (My first tool of choice)
but you will have great fun with it and make great finds too.
Another plus is that it is light and packs into a small bag if you break it
down, You can swing the Lasers all day unlike my Minelab which is like
having a nearly full wheelie bin strapped to your arm.
I would try Regtons, Joan Allens, Crawfords, Treasure Land etc and also
consider the sales pages in the two detecting magazines
