Iron Age fort = how far away did they live from the fort.

Hi All,

i have recently got permission to detect on the surrounding fields of
a iron age hill fort.
There are very distinctive earth works and it is quite large around.
The earthworks are a ancient momument so there is no way i would
detect in or close to them.

what interests me is the following,

1=Did people live in the enclosed fort.
2=or did they live close to the fort.
3=would they have farmed around the fort.

I would realy welcome any help as i am working out the best places to
start searching .
