Default Identifying corroded coins....

How can I identify coins that have no visible markings on them? Assuming
they're not buttons but have unfortunately fell to ravages of time and
fertilisers. Can I identify from remaining features, for example; material
(inc. remnants of plating) diameter, thickness. I don't think for a minute
they're too old ( C17th to early C20th) but as a newcomer it's
frustrating!!!

Thanks ...Andre

This may sound daft but believe me it does tend to work.

Just because you can't see any details with your normal sight it doesn't
mean all details have been eroded.

What I do is put them on my scanner and scan them at high resolution and
then print the picture out so it comes out about the size of a side plate.
You can then pin them to the wall and stand back a few paces and get a real
good view of said coin.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for that John, i'll give it a go when i find the power supply for my
scanner! A touch of 'editing' on my photo software may also enhance
something I can't see!

Cheers...Andre
