Hi Neil,
Have you bought a detector yet? There are also some great detecting Forums out there for help and advice. GMP Tim wrote: > How many active posters are there in this newsgroup? |

No, I've not bought a detector yet. I've had a hankering to do some detecting for years and have some time on my hands now the kids are all getting older and going off to Uni. So, I'm doing a fair bit of research on various sites on the web and reading some reviews of good beginners detectors. I may well hire one for a weekend or two to see how well I get on before making a decision about purchase. I've read about organised detecting rallies and may well go along to one of these. I'm also quite often down at the caravan in Selsey so would be quite keen to do some detecting on the beach. I live in Hertfordshire and there are many roman sites round here, such as the Verulamium so I should never be short of somewhere to go detecting. Obviously, I've been reading up too on where to detect, who to ask for permission etc so that I don't get into any trouble or disturb any known historic sites. Can't wait to get started. Just steer clear of eBay when you decide to buy. There are dozens of
sellers claiming that their detectors are the best thing on the market but they are little more than kids toys. Stick with the main brands (Whites, Minelab, Tesoro/Laser, XP, Garret (not all models) and some by Fisher). Also have a look on UKDN which has a very good beginers section. http://forumukdetectornet.co.uk/phpBB2/ Tim Neil wrote: > Tim > > No, I've not bought a detector yet. Which Garrett and Fisher detectors should I steer away from? Any hints?

I've now purchased a second hand White's XLT 1.1 off of ebay. Took it out for the first time in some local woods and found a musket ball (about 14mm diameter) and a couple of .303 rifle cartridges along with the normal pull rings, foil and car parts. Oh and I found 10p too - that'll start to pay for the tector lol Am now looking for decent places to go hunting in the Watford area - I'll probably join a local club so I can get on some rallies Neil "GMP Tim" <tiny.storer@btinternet.com> wrote in message news:1155205730.638634.133290@q16g2000cwq.googlegr oups.com... > Hi Neil, > > Have you bought a detector yet? macbull wrote: > Which Garrett and Fisher detectors should I steer away from? Any hints? All of them! Seriously, it all depends on what your budget is and where you want to search (inland, beach or both). I only have experience of the Garrett Ace 150 and 250 which are surprisingly good. The fact that you see very few Fisher detectors at rallies also gives an idication of how good people think they are. Have a look on the following link and look at the depth comparisons between various models: http://www.staffsmetaldetectors.co.uk/depth_test.htm |
