Hehe, even though the button is neither old nor valuble its kind of
intriguing to have a glimpse of lettering on it! The 'coin' on closer inspection appears to be two discs together, slightly visible on the corrosion that appears to be laminated. Does the copper inlay give any clues to its age or function? I'm getting into this detecting lark, the farmers dog no longer barks on my arrival, my wife thinks i'm having an affair and my knees are constantly soiled..... <no pants jokes please!!> Cheers...Andre |

Hi Mexi
So the Farmer's dog 'PANTS' now instead of barks? You wore brown coloured 'PANTS' before when the dog barked, now it fancies you, you wear 'BOXER PANTS'. Is it a boxer dog? I've got two of the nutcases. And................so far, your finds are 'PANTS' All finds are good finds. Glad you are enjoying it. Hand over to Goosy for some really good 'PANTS' jokes. The item with the copper insert has now been identified as a tin farthing
circa 1684-1692. Quoted as being 'a rare find in any condition' on the tinternet and the local FLO wishes to log it. Ebay has several on auction, one of which has a £350 BUY IT NOW (albeit in far better condition!!) All in all, a nice find, one I shall remember for a long time..... Cheers...Andre |

I've only just stumbled across this ng, as I'm conducting some basic
research before launching myself into a hobby that's intrigued me for a while! I don't know what's been posted here up to now on this thread, but if it's any use, the cap badge is Royal Army Chaplains Department circa 1900. At least I can claim to know my cap badges! Can anyone here recommend any "Idiot's Guides for beginners" or some useful websites? Do you have a link to a site where I could view another pic of this badge, perhaps in better condition? As a newcomer myself, i'd like to print off small labels for my more interesting finds so in years to come my faded memory won't be hard pushed to remember all this research! I don't have any particular sites myself at present but have signed up here: http://www.ukdetecting-database.com The natives are friendly and have help identify a recent find of mine, a worn tin farthing that the local FLO wishes to log.... Cheers...Andre |

Yep,
That's the Beast! It should be a glossy black finish all over. The later design was a bit more elaborate and a matte black finish.
