Default Cross-posted advisory notice

If any of you are using News.Individual.Net as your newsgroup provider
please be advised that from April 1st (no joke) they are terminating all
accounts that haven't been upgraded, read the following:-
Welcome to News.Individual.NET
Important notice:

Effective from April 1st, 2005, use of News.Individual.NET will not be free
of charge anymore. The news service will continue as a fee-based service.
The fee for an account for News.Individual.NET is 10 EUR per year (annual
payment), that converts to only 0.84 EUR per month.

Effective immediately, registration for our news service is only possible
through our web site (Registration). Registration by e-mail (as hitherto) is
no longer possible.

Holders of existing accounts who want to continue using their account need
to convert it into a pay account. This is also only possible through our web
site (Registration). You will find all details on terms and conditions
there.

For more information (especially on transitional periods, background, and
payment options), please also check our public announcements.

Please note:

Effective from April 1st, 2005, all non-converted accounts will stop
working.

Users who use the server News.CIS.DFN.DE as part of the DFNNetNews project
are not affected by the changes described above. Nothing will change for
these users, they do not need to do anything.

I found this out whilst trying to open a new account for a friend and saw
that they will be charging ten Euros from April. They do not intend to email
existing members - so much for German business manners!

Which brings me to ask the old question again - what other alternatives are
people using?

I "like" using OE as opposed to web based newsreaders (JF - leave it, I am
after all an Addlestone Comprehensive yobo. :-) ).

OE is complicated, difficult to use, and doesn't work properly.

Give Agent a chance - you'll wonder what you ever saw in OE.

"Complicated" ? couldn't be simpler, it comes with a defaulted email client
with every new PC sold and so it's free. I certainly cannot say that it's
difficult to use, I've been using it for six years and can say that I'm 95%
happy with it. Sure Forte may be excellent, but I'm sick of
buying/downloading software just to prove that the original software was not
at fault.

Any other suggestions?

If you are happy with OE, why are you cross-posting to several groups asking for alternatives, and then rejecting the answers you are given?

Also why are you also cross-posting the notice about NIN that they have already sent direct to all their customers?

I have dismissed just ONE suggestion and I've cross-posted to the groups
that I am aware that other NIN friends use.

please read my earlier reply to Susan, I changed my email address so I've
realised that NIN are not at fault.

BTW, who are you?

I have not seen your reply to Susan. One of the reasons why it is bad practice to cross-post to many groups as you have done, is that different people respond in different groups, so that a user of just one group doesn't see all the responses. Consequently a different thread forms in each group and the result is nonsense.

Hear hear!
It is a macho thing: Hey, I know how to cross post - it makes me look clever. Bwadr!
It doesn't look clever - it shows you don't know how to make a web page!

Just swapped mine from them to Freenetname. We've used it before and it's an
ok service. (and still with OE)

So did I until recently. I only changed because with OE, even with
quote-fix, I couldn't seem to get my sig right. Am now using 40tudeDialog,
which I am finding much easier than Free Agent which I tried in the past.
It sorts out the >> stuff too, which OE makes a mess of. I'm still using OE
for email but Dialog does this too, just haven't got around to setting it
up yet.

http://40tude.com/dialog/

if you want to have a look.

I paid CC fashion 7.19 GBP to continue using NIN -
went through painlessly. The one bit that seemed
mysterious is Firstgate and BT click&pay connection -
operated seemlessly without requiring cross-
notification.

gazeta.pl is still a free NNTP service in Poland, Anglicised
sign-up details are available on web, can be 5 - 10 seconds
before up or downloading unlike NIN

Mark thanks for the warning re news.individual.net, like yourself I have an
account and have also changed my ISP so any emails they sent out did not
reach me. If I manage to find an alternative (free) service i will let you
know. I have removed the other newsgroups from the reply list to prevent
complaints about cross-posting.

Only my opinion, but you asked for opinions!

Just because Microsoft give OE away for nothing doesn't make it good.

You can download and try Agent free of charge, and you can continue to
use it free for ever, if you don't want to pay them a very small sum
for the extras that are included in the full version.

Really, I didn't see any "Free Download" buttons on their site, are we
talking aboute Forte or another News Agent? I'll try again if there's a free
trial.

Yes, Forte Agent.

You can download the software and run it, and if you don't want to pay
for it, it will continue as "Free Agent" for ever.

Give it a try.

You could try news.usenetzone.com (via www.usenetzone.com to subscribe) or
if you're handy with setting up accounts manually then I've found a very
fast service at 195.131.52.135 (nntp server name).

Why don't you try the google groups at http://groups.google.com All
you have to do is to sign in and you'll be able to read/send messages
to any of the groups. You can read everything without signing in. When
you enter the site you have to find our group (first view the list of
all groups click on the uk, then uk.rec and it should be there). Tell
me if it works :-)) Maciej

There are plenty of options constituting neither OE nor a browser-based

Nice one Raj, - answer a two week old thread without reading the middle
bits. Not only did you state the obvious "there are plenty of options" you
neglected to offer any suggestions which was my (the OP) request in the
first place.

As it happens, I've tried Forte Agent alongside OE and cannot see it's
advatages. It certainly works but the fonts are too small, there is an extra
pane that isn't required and I cannot see that it retains or catches any
more posts than OE.
