Does any one know of any good sites in Cornwall, especially near
Penzance...I am fed up of collecting 20p pieces from the beach

Many thanks

Hi Andy,
The Romans didn't bother with you lot very much, too far to walk.
Farms will provide the best pickings, or if you want some GOOD stuff,
research which ships sank where on the coastline, plenty around the Lizzard
Peninsula, and detect at low tide after a storm !

No more help young man, do your research like a good lad !

Jim

Jim is absolutely right, and research is the best thing you can do. Also see
my recent postings in this newsgroup about the medieval silver ring I found
in Gwithian (near St. Ives) on the beach. Look out for shingle banks, as
that's where coins and other things of about the same weight can collect.

I have also found a lot of good stuff in the dunes near beaches, as that's
where "courting couples" seem to lose vast amounts of jewellery (and maybe
other things!!)

Fortunately, my family is from the Devon/Cornwall border south of Bude, and
I still haven't finished checking our farm over but it has produced a lot of
interesting, if not very valuable, finds over the years.

Good luck...

Many thanks for the replies, however I wish to clarify the Romans did get
to Cornwall although their influence was not great, I believe there is a
Roman Fort at Ashton (Tregonning Hill) between Penzance and Helston however
it is not accessible due to overgrown terrain...Maybe their is some Bronze
Age and of course all the coastal paths where Cornish Wreckers buried their
goods before going to market to set up sales of their goods...Lots must of
forgotten where they put goods or never made it back to recover their bits

Andy

Thanks for the tip on the dunes it sounds interesting !!!!!

He's been in trouble for the roof of the Sistine chapel. Apparently the
paint was too heavy !

Hi John
I have been really busy workwise. Knackered when I get home. Been popping in
a bit to see what's going on. Good to see some new faces. Only been out
detecting once in last 4 months. BTW, Jim told me to use lead paint on the
Sistine Chapel ceiling and Paul supplied the lead.
Hope to get in here more often in future.
Regards
Rev
