Could you TX the Wi-Fi Protocol on another freqency other than 2.4 ghz???
the IEEE 801.1 (I think) protocol just seemd to be "faster Packet"... shurley like a voice on 2 mtrs or 10 mtrs its the same...? would it be possible to convert this or even half the speed to someting we could transmit on "radio" I,m thinking you probably need a big bandwidth... simply replies only thx.... :>0 Tony |

Hello,
You can transmit any mode on any frequency you like but need to be licenced to do so, have access to equipment that is capable, or be able to design your own and build it. Packet has all been done before on CB going back to 1988 when I had a go with a Ham International Multimode 2 and a PK-88. Due to the limitation of the radios bandwidth it would only operate at 300baud on SSB and 1200baud on FM. A few friends modified a couple of standard UK40 CBs and got them to work at speeds of 9600baud but it was unreliable. Just hook up a beam to a WiFi card and away you go, much easier than messing about with CBs that use outdated technology and have little following now. A Wi-Fi (802.11b) transmission has a bandwidth of about 22 MHz so your theoretical Wi-Fi CB would be transmitting everywhere between 16 MHz and 38 MHz simultaneously (and that's only for one channel). > shurley like a voice on 2 mtrs or 10 mtrs its the same...? Not exactly the same - you're allowed slightly more bandwidth on 2 meters due to the wider channel spacing. > would it be possible to convert this or even half the speed to someting > we could transmit on "radio" The most the hams could squeeze into 12.5 kHz channel spacing was 9600 baud. CB channel spacing is less than that at 10 kHz so unless you want to make transmissions that spread over multiple conventional channels and replace the filters in your radios with wider bandwidth filters to receive such transmissions, forget it. |

CB wasnt designed for all these extra bits..... CB was intended for plain speech for local communications... you might also notice your bread wont toast properly in the dish washer..... it wasnt designed for it.... If you intended using packet etc you really should go M3 and use the proper equipment.... simple !! If you just want to chat to locals then CB's your baby... also simple.. As far as outdated technology you could have fascinating convo's on amateur bands with ZZZPK about the morse code )Graham |

It was only a (interesting) question I didn,t want to start an argument or anything....it was just something of interest to talk about.... Packet was used (and still is on FM ...CB in fact up to 60,000 stations in Germany Holland Belgium Denmark used packet Legal since 1992 ish in varing countries.... In Germany about 65% of Secondry shools had a CB packet sation providing a national network!! It was used to teach basic computing data comms and such like in the sciences... if you check it out (27.235 and 245 ) more frequencies for Germany... You will find out it was quite popular but has faded as the internet has become cheaper... as most hobbies have!!! all the best again and thx TONY |

I sold one on Ebay recently, nothing special, in a tatty box for £52 (or threabouts) a while back you could buy them new for £19.99. Likewise the jokeable midland 77-099 basic CB (hasnt even got a meter) regularly go on Ebay for £40 + .... I still say though that you, like a lot of the B-licences and other Amateurs of varying licences come in here because you know its the best newsgroup related to radio.... go on... admit it.... you know we know it already. |

Yes thats true, i never really liked the improved mic any better. It looked and felt cheap although others will say it was a good improvement. The one i sold last year had the commando style mic with it and i think thats one of the reasons why it went for what it did as they are rare now, especially in good condition. A lot mock the Amstrad 900/901 but in all honesty they were middle of the road. There were a lot more lesser rigs than them. Like the York 869 (murphy mobile) or the sapphire x2000/fidelity1000, plannet 2000/communicators and so on. As for the sixties type styling your absolutely right. Look at a lot of the earlier 23 channel AM type cb's from the late 60's early 70's and theres a close resemblance to rigs produced in the 80's. Graham |
