I'm just about to buy a home base attenna. I'm not too bothered about cost,
but do want an exceptional quality one. I'm considering a High Gain Sillver Rod 1/2 wave, (£17.95), and I used to have one many years ago when my Aunty Mary used to be a CBer in the early 80s. Is there much difference in performance when compared to the 5/8 wave version (£19.95) or do I need to get a Sirio Vector 4000 (£65) to see noticeable performance increase? I'd prefer a pre-SWRed / pretuned antenna. Any advise gratefullly received. My rig is a Midland 77-099. Best regards, Martin |

Basic 1/2 wave's are not as good as you would think and nowhere as good as
the original pre SWRed silver rod from back in the day.. a 5/8 will only have about 1 to 2 S points difference.. a vector 4000/sigma 4 is a sky wave antenna and no good for local work as the antenna radiates skywards in a 'mushroom' effect..very good for DX.. a good (IMHO) antenna is a sirio tornado, or a sirio 827 but at £49 and £79 respectivly is this what you want to spend ?? the antronn 99 is also a good antenna being a co-linear it is good, but be aware the out protective coating wears off after about 5 years and needs another coat in good varnish.. these are also pre SWRed with fine adjusting which is easy..around £49. look on www.kcb.co.uk or www.truck-king.co.uk for base antennas.. then come back with what purpose you want one for..be it DX local..CB or 26 to 28Mhz ?? regards.. My Imax lasted about 13 months befor it snapped...in a very recent
strong wind.. so just be aware.... they do fail but a fiberglass antenna is best...as they tend to be more well made... Trucking have some specials in at the moment I think up to the 100 pound mark...!!! good luck with the radio... Tony, P.s If you don,t mind or want directivity you can make an antenna for about 20 quid in a day and it will out perform all the above by about 50% at least. GO to www.dxzone.com and search for "delta loop" |

how come knights have stopped supplying the I-Max?
I was wondering if one would retune to 12 metres. Then they stopped selling them? |

Tox,
Thank for the advice. The Truck King web page implies that it is a 5/8 wavelength (i.e. 24' long) but makes no mention of how much power it can handle. I'm considering using a 200watt burner. I'm gonna hit the Net to suss out the theory of antennas. I want to understand this 1/2 wave or 5/8 wave stuff. I think I'm turning into a geek. Hi J,
Thanks for the link. Very strange though, that they don't list the Silver Rod. Neither does their only listed UK distirbutor. Try this for a start: http://www.citizensband.radiouk.com/ukcb/tech/ This site should have some antenna basics PDF downloads: http://www.hottconsultants.com/ If the documents are no longer available, I should have copies of them here. SWR info: http://www.wenzel.com/documents/swr.html Regards, Peter http://www.citizensband.radiouk.com/ |

I have tried nearly all the commecially available homebase antennas over the past 20 or so years and the best currently available in my personal opinion is the Sirio 827. It far outperformed my Antron 99. Cheers Graham |

If you do go for a "silver rod" then stay clear of the cheap ones .Go for
the sirio half wave.It wont bend in the first bit of wind. I use a Sirio 827 and have done for some years now but i realise they are a bit hard on the eye for some people. I wonder why the Imax has been discontinued if they are supposed to be that good?? Dave |

The thunderpoles worked really well on skip DX but couldn't touch the sigma for anything else. It was really amazing. I think there are copies still available dont know what they are like though, maybe worth a look. Mark |
