Your Fidelity 3000 is a 40ch FM CB homebase, the president Madison Homebase
from what i recall was a 40ch (possibly 80ch) am/usb/lsb radio. It doesnt
have the UK40 unless it has been severely adapted and whatever the case is
not a legal rig to use in the UK plus the fact of its limited blocks would
put me off it. It depends on what you want to do with your radio. If you
want a basic set to try SSB and arent too worried about UKFM it might be of
some interest to you but IMHO i would save up for something like a Superstar
3900 (Around £139 new, a lot cheaper secondhand) and although they arent
homebases you can power it through a CB Power Supply which are readily
available and cheap (especially on ebay) and the extra channels you would
have plus the fact you could also chat on UKFM would be a much better move,
also if you are serious about DX and SSB its a much better option for you.
That said it is also an illegal to use radio if its used ... If you want to
be legal that is...

Hi again,
I've just acquired one via eBay but the auction states AM/FM/SSB...having FM
was one of the main reasons I went for it.
I've asked the seller to confirm it has FM and am still waiting for the
answer.

just because it has fm doesnt mean it has the legal set of channels.

IIRC there were several different versions of the Madison...

US model AM/SSB 40 channel with UPD858 PLL
US model AM/SSB 40 channel US with MB8719 PLL
Export model AM/FM/SSB 80 channel with MB8719 PLL

Thanks folks.
Still not sure if SSB is worth having though, not enough replies to my
previous posting.

Compared to the Fidelity, the Madison:
1. Has a clock.
2. Has SSB
3. Is less prone to bleedover (anything beats the Fidelity).
4. Can usually be modified for more channels.
5. Eprom may still be available for UK channels.

However, not so good, the Madison also:
1. Is older.
2. Was not designed for UK mains, so may not be earthed.
3. Has an old mechanical digital clock.
4. May suffer from poor image rejection (due to the filter used,
some old Unidens were bad for this).
5. Is totally illegal to be caught in possession of.

There were different versions made as they changed to more recent board
versions. I believe that the FM was often added, using a separate FM board
connected to one of the push buttons on the front. IIRC, the high band was
the same.

They are now outdated technology, radio design has moved on from
there. However, it may be worthwhile to someone with an interest in
collecting museum pieces - and with no fear of the law.

The old Unidens were truely poor in this area. As the image was just
910KHz away and there was no 2nd IF filter, you could pick up image
signals about as well as the wanted signal.
Their image rejection could be compared to the Fidelity dynamic range.

The Lincolns did have better filtering, but I know some had a reputation
for bleedover and poor signal meter readings. Have you tried an active filter
in the first IF? I know they made a big difference on the earlier Lincolns.
