10w to 250w is a substantial difference. Something like 14dBi. That's a
clear 2 S Points.

That is the difference between being in the bottom of the noise and being
at Radio 4-5. This is particularly relevant at longer distances.

As to 'unfriendly to fellow operators' I'm legally allowed to operate with
400w PEP, so why shouldn't I do so if I choose to? Clearly if I'm in the
car, I'm running at 10-50w. From home, I will use the power level I feel
is appropriate for the contact I am trying to make.

250w PEP is quite acceptable for US and Asian contacts.

WOW!!!
This just gets betterer and betterereerer....

Thanks for all the feedback folks.

Sorry to be a plonker mike but, could you explain a little more about the
following paragraph - my antenna is 22ft up the side of my house with nowt
but concrete below.

"well next i'd ground your pole to a nice copper stake a few feet in the
ground.
get an old bit of thick coax or any very thick wire (thicker the better)
and hosepipe clip the thing between the two using the shortest route
possible.
this will not only improve you RX & TX, it will also cutdown your BCI."

Oh, and after playing around a little I've managed a distance of 10 miles at
around 3S....

well done andy your getting there.

in some way, shape or form, you need to get a good earth on that beasty.
the better the earth the better the performance.

i'd stay away from mains earth & try a diff method.
how about a copper water pipe by the aerial inside the loft or a radiator
pipe?
what age is your house, it should be bonded by now. and not have TOO much
plastic pipes.

i'll poke a few RF grounding sites around later.
let you see how us Hams try to go about it!
