Default Modifying an amateur radio to work on CB.

I am thinking of buying a Yaesu FT817ND but would like to modify it
to receive and transmit on the CB bands. I know this can be done, but
does anyone here know how it is done -- I don't?

It may be technically illegal to do this but if the frequencies and
power output are correct, I cannot see anyone complaining.

In my experience, amateur rigs are built to a higher quality than
dedicated CB ones.

Yes, and a search on google will easily find this information

No, it's not Technically illegal, it is illegal.

The new pan european CB radio's are built to the approved spec, and
selectivity wise will work better than any HF set on CB.

If you want to Tx on the CB bands then buy a CB, simple really!!

If you really want to open it there is plenty of information on the internet
about how to. However opening the radio is not "technically illegal", it is
illegal.

Your experience of CB radio's is outdated then!, the modern CB mutli country
european radio's in fairness to them are built to a much higher spec than
the old CB's!, the modern CB's selectivity will be a lot better than any HF
set converted for use on the CB bands.

Have a look on www.mods.dk you will have to register but it's free. I
hope this NG doesn't turn into uk.radio.amateur with all the flaming and
stuff. Yes Im sure you know it's illegal. No one needs to tell you that.

As for the Yaesu 817. They are poop. Go for something all HF that will
give you 100 Watts out of the rig. Not 5w like the 817. I would recommend
Icom 706 and they are around the same price.

No. Opening them isn't illegal; txing out of band is as is using radios not
stamped for use on those bands.

No running 100 Watts is not mad. BTW Im not mad ether, but thanks for your
concern

Provided you have a clean signal where is the problem? Also just because
you have a radio that will run at 100 Watts, it doesnt meen to say you have
to run it at 100 Watts. You could run it at 5w for local and then crank it
up for DX work.

Now when replying to your post Malkavian, I had to consider if this was just
another lame flame attempt or were you really concerned about people
breaking the CB rules. You seemed to make a big deal about output power.
You didnt make a big deal about using equipment that wasn't type approved.
So to clear things up can you explain your opinion?.

Regards

Andy

Another? When was the previous ones?

>or were you really concerned about people breaking the CB rules.

TBH. It's not my concern. This is Ofcom's territory and whether they choose
to act or not is entirely their own affair.

My opinion is that if you are going to use none type approved equipment then
don't draw attention to youself by making it obvious. IYSWIM.

100w is the norm around here,
most CBers are using HF sets, some of us use HF sets to drive little linears
like my 1kw..
it's no good having 4w or even 25w, you just don't get heard, 100w is
minimum, i use 250w mobile and even then i struggle to get heard..i might
try an aerial as well..!!
