Maybe a Fidelity Man?

Anyhow, if the item you are selling is an Amateur radio, this is the wrong
group. This is a CB group, and it is illegal to use Amateur radio equipment
to transmit on CB frequencies.

If the item in question is an Icom CB, then I have to agree with the comment
about quality.
Icom 1050, SMC Oscar, Lowe TX40... Amateur radio companies should not
have soiled their names on such crap. Can the names ever be taken seriously
after they appeared on equipment that was, even by CB standards, crap?

Regards,

Peter.

Icom, Yaesu... what's the difference, they are all glorified CBs. Buy the radio,
connect the antenna and get chatting - just like CB.
When Amateurs buy their equipment, rather than get their fingers dirty, then
is it any wonder that the government has made Amateur easier?

Some years back, I remember being in Lowe Electronics and commenting on
the sale of wire antennas, which even CBers can make, to Amateurs. The
reply was, that's nothing - they are even buying patch leads rather than make
them.
So, who "dumbed it down" first, the government or the Amateurs?

One or two good points Peter but Im afraid you will have to move with the
times. Designing and building a radio like almost anything you can buy
these days would be beyond most people in the hobby. It wouldn't be cost
effective ether. I don't see the harm in buying radio's as long as we
understand how they work.

Buying patch leads sounds bad but you have to remember that some people in
the hobby are getting on a bit and cant make their own. I prefer to make my
own.

Andy

I don't mind moving with the times, as long as the movement is in
the right direction.
There does seem to be this assumption that new and modern is best,
and that new technology has to replace old. Sometimes the new
technology is flawed or best used for certain jobs, while the old
technology may be better for some jobs.

Sometimes the new technology does not last long, as they find
something else. Then you are left replacing your equipment again. I
wonder how the "green" brigade feel about all that electronic
equipment being dumped when it works perfectly.

I just heard on the news that one High Street chain is dropping
CRT based TVs - even though they are still selling in the millions.
Are they "moving with the times" or simply telling the customers
what they *will* buy, so they can boost their profits?

After the bad period in the late 1980s, I suspect that the industry is
using every possible trick to keep sales going. Any new idea, any
change - just to sell the customer another new version.

> Buying patch leads sounds bad but you have to remember that

To old to solder a plug on a piece of coax? Maybe they would
also like help keying the microphone.
I really doubt that is what keeps the businesses going, more likely
lazy gits and those who see Amateur as the new CB.

> Designing and building a radio like almost anything you can buy
> these days would be beyond most people in the hobby.

The point is not to design to production standard, which is why
bands are set aside and Amateurs are not allowed to build their
own CBs, etc.
Just to be able to build or modify your own equipment, for your own
use, on the bands set aside for it.

> It wouldn't be cost effective ether.

Is a hobby supposed to be cost effective? It's not a business, and you
don't have to get too complicated just to be able to communicate.

>I don't see the harm in buying radio's as long as we

>
> I prefer to make my own.

I believe that anyone unwilling to do so much as their own leads and
wire antennas, who just want to connect and chat, should stick to CB. That's
what CB is for, chatting.
Not that I would kick off old gits, just because they cannot solder any more. Just
that anyone taking up Amateur should have an interest in the technical and
practical side of radio and electronics.

Knowing theory is fine, but that's no substitute for practical experience.

Peter.

OK Peter, this is not the right NG for all this but how about you share some
of your basic homebrew transceiver designs with us and see if we can get
people up and running. Yes I know you can google for stuff like this but
how about you putting something in and maybe offer some help to people who
get stuck.

Like you say, this is not really the group for homebrew designs.
Designs for antennas, power supplies, etc. are not a problem for
this group, as you are allowed to make or modify your own.

I don't have a great deal of spare time right now, but I would like to try
out a few ideas for loft antennas. Anything that I get the time for goes
on the Web site, so it's available when I am not.

>Yes I know you can google for stuff like this but how about you putting

Unfortunately, I wouldn't have the time to offer a great deal of "support". At
the moment, I am kept busy sorting out local problems - mainly Windows
systems constantly crashing.
Sometimes, I feel like unplugging the phone.

Regards,

Peter.
