And besides there is still some die hards around here, (Donegal - Derry) using 27 MHz. Therefore your statement of "Nobody is using cb radios these days! To imply it was dead would mean no one would be on it but there is. A lot of stations just sit on the 19 just monitoring waiting for someone they know to come on or they sit on a channel waiting for their friends. I agree it may seem very quiet in parts but whos fault is that?? OURS... we should all be out there promoting our hobby and try to get our friends and family involved. CB radio can be an extremely cheap way for keeping in touch with each other especially as CB's are now cheap as chips (unless you go to ebay but even there theres bargains to be had) . Maybe the new "Dukes of Hazzard" movie might spur a few oldies back or make people think about it for the first time. The series run from January 79 and was CB based so who knows, the movie might spurn some new users !! Advising people to move to Amateur is not really the answer. Amateur should be the route for people to further their interest in radio and its technical side even though the M3 licence is apparently easy to get. CB is the avereage persons tool for communication and should not be mixed in with mobile phones/amateur/internet which are in themselves fine ways of communicating but not totally superior. Each medium has its own benefits and pitfalls. Lots of people who i know have abandoned their average weekly CB'ing to internet chatting which is good fun but it cant be used to communicate from mobile to base by the driver realistically so they keep their CB set ups but arent on them as much as they once were. I know this post goes on a bit but its giving anyone whos reading it food for thought (hopefully) This weekend im going to make the effort to fit my Beta 4100 in my new car as i havnt got round to it yet so once im out and about ill let people see it and try to get them interested. Theres a whole generation of teenagers out there who know nothing of CB..... lets introduce it to them )Graham www.open-channel.co.uk |

Hello,
I remember the days of networks, skip and not being able to find a clear channel. It's a shame no one is interested now. They have the Internet, text messaging, mobile phones and Instant Messenger etc. It brings back memories of the people using echo power mics, horrific roger bleeps, over the top modulation and playing music. Then "can I have a rig check", "who's on channel" and rubbish like that every few minutes. The funniest thing was people didn't understand that when one person was talking, they couldn't hear at the same time! Don't even get me started on "I've got a 300w burner and a silver rod". Like a fishing licence it needs no expertise its just a tax on the use of airwaves. Why would we need a new level of licence??? its the Amateur groups that needed that (M3) to save amateur radio from extinction... now stop being a silly boy and get back to your cup of tea and slice of cake.... |

CB radio is far and few in Ireland is because the CB shops seem to be at the
other end of the country, like Waterford, Donegal or Dublin, now if you are in Cork like me, you have to travel 160KMs to get anywhere, if it's Dublin 245KMs to far to go, they want Visa cards, so most won't bother. Ebay sellers won't send any CB's over as they think they won't get paid, ( any SSB sets going cheap lads) I have an old 5/8 wave Dipole and 50m of RG8 no rig though any offers?
