Wasp or not?

Hi,

Can you help?

My father and I saw an insect, wasp like, with normal black and yellow
banding but with a very bright red bottom/lower thorax. Size approximately
1.5 inches. It was flying during sunny intervals in our flowery type
woodland edge garden during yesterday afternoon (19th May)

My feeling is that it was a type of hornet but we can't find an exact match
for the u.k. online or otherwise.
