Default Moth ID Please

I took a picture of a particularly spectacular moth on the decking, a few
days ago. I believe it could be a male Emperor moth. There is a picture of
it on the bird diary page at:-

http://www.daviv.com/diary_2006_01.htm

Any confirmation, please?

Cheers.

I think you should check the links as it won't come up.

I think that it's more likely to be a female Emperor - the male has a more
brightly coloured underwing. According to Chinery adults should be active
Apr to June so the time is right.

Definitely a female for the reason David gives.

The pair are illustrated on the front cover of the superb "Field Guide
to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland" by Waring and Townsend,
illustrations by Richard Lewington. If you haven't got it and are
remotely interested in moths, get it!

Thank you. The illustration that I saw showed a female as being much
greyer. I shall change to caption.

Cheers,

Dave

What a beautiful moth! The largest one that we have seen was an Old
Lady, but the most colourful was a newly-emerged Elephant Hawk Moth -
vivid magenta and lime green.
