Default Is this a roe deer, please?

http://www.trik.demon.co.uk/images/roe%20deer_query.jpg

The markings around the nose and mouth look right, but there is no
white patch at the rear. It was quite small, although I don`t think
it was a fawn.

Thanks

Kate

What ever it is be very careful around Deer at this time of year, a lady got
near some females and fawns in Bushy park a couple of weeks ago to
photograph them (stupid imo) not realising she had got between the stag and
his females. He charged her and ripped out her intestines, she only survived
because a Doctor saw it happen and stuffed them all back.
Deer are not domesticated animals even in Deer Parks.

Thanks for the warning, Bob, but as the beautiful sunshine and seeding
grasses show, this photo was taken back in the summer, in the wild
rough of a golf course. There doesn`t seem to be a herd of them -
just two or three individuals which I`ve seen only very occasionally
and never a stag. I did a search for images on-line, and only the roe
was anything like it : certainly not a red deer, too small for sika,
not fallow, wrong shaped head for muntjac... Still, it would be nice
to have confirmation. Anyone?

Kate

PS : re the photographer in Bushy Park, I know what it is like to be
so focussed on your subject, that everything else is forgotten.

I am afraid I have to disagree. To me it is a young Roe (I believe Kid
is the correct term in Roe). As the photo (very good by the way) was
loading the ears alone said Roe to me.

The statement of a small family group also to me means Roe is much more
likely than Fallow which is a herding species.

I also thought it is a Roe (black snout, ears),
but I think it has a tail and there is some black
on the back, so a Fallow is more likely.
But how about Sika?

More info required! When the photo was taken and where.

And it's a very young roe;-) Others suggest Fallow, not so, nor Sitka.

Yes, the photo was taken end June, on a golf course which is in a
Country Park in Dorset. It must have been lying down in the long
grass when I disturbed it, and I only had the one chance for a photo,
unfortunately. I guess it was about 2 1/2 to 3 ft tall, judging from
the grasses, and was on its own. I believe that there are sitkas and
muntjacs in the park as well as roe, and it was the lack of white on
the behind that led me to doubt my initial ID of roe.

Thanks for all the replies.

My second opinion is a Sika;-) After looking again it seems as though it's
slightly spotted on the back;-)

See photo of a young Sika:

It is definitely not a Muncjac. And to confuse the issue;-) How about a
Chinese water deer (Hydropotes inermis) ;-)

Today I spoke to a Ranger at the Country Park, and although she
admitted that she wasn`t an expert, she thought it was a young roe in
the process of losing its baby coat as she thought she could detect
remnants of white spots. Apparently there are no muntjac in the Park,
contrary to what I thought, but they do have fallow deer. She wasn`t
sure about sika/sitka. As the majority of opinions point to roe, I
think I shall now remove the query from my website entry.

Many thanks again for the input.

Kate
