Default insect ID

Does anyone know what this is:

<http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/bofphoto/insect1.jpg>
<http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/bofphoto/insect2.jpg>
<http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h222/bofphoto/insect3.jpg>

it's 2cm from nose to tail, and it's the second one that's appeared in
the basement in a week or so. Looks like some kind of wasp or bee to my
uneducated eye, but there's no sign of a sting in the tail, it's got a
hairy back and smooth underside.

Thanks for that, having searched on "Volucella zonaria" it certainly
looks like one. So what's the characteristics that mark it out as a
hover fly? I haven't seen it hover like the small ones I'm used to
seeing.

Gosh, thanks, those are my first ever insect photos. The camera's a
Nikon 995, it's fairly low spec by today's standards, but I like it as
it can focus down to 2cm and has a swivel lens, they go for about
£100-£120 on eBay if you're interested. The rest of the kit was a jam
jar with a piece of flat glass taped over the top, fortunately the hover
fly was pretty docile and not moving much.
