To treat depression and excruciating fibromyalgia pain, do people recommend
Cymbalta or Effexor? Effexor would end up being about half the price. Is there any reason to pay more for the Cymbalta? Thank you. |

Yes - if you have stock in Lilly.

I use Pamelor (nortriptyline) for pain, as well as my depression. It costs
much less than either Cymbalta or Effexor, as it is old and available as a generic. I was taking 4 Aleve a day for approximately the same amount of relief. It started working around 50 mg. I am at 100 right now. It is a tricyclic, so it will have a different side-effect profile than the Cymbalta or Effexor, but you will need to determine for yourself if it is acceptable. A website that has very comprehensive information on all these meds (although not oriented to fibro) is www.crazymeds.org so you may want to check out some of the info there. Good luck. Cymbalta is believed to help with periphial nerve pain that many diabetics
suffer. This line of thinking they did trials on FM patients. They had some good results....But like everything else Fibro...what is good for one isn't for the other...I tried Effexor...Made my stomach mad...I tried Cymbalta...Did nothing for my pain and my copay was double...So I finally ask for Prozac...Oldie but goodie...Doesn't help my pain, but helps the depression and gives me a small boost of energy... Hope this helps...
