THERE were reports of a tornado touching down in the North-East last
night.

One eye-witness reported seeing the phenomena, more usually associated
with the USA, close to the A1 near Sedgefield.

It was reported to have happened around 9.30pm.

A spokesman for the Met Office did not discount the sighting, saying
that weather conditions were favourable yesterday.

"We had a south-westerly wind at the surface and a southerly higher up
in the atmosphere, around 10,000ft. When the air is going in different
directions at different speeds at different levels that, combined with
intense convection, can give you tornadoes."
