Default Why did you become a naturist?

A fairly light-hearted topic!
I became a naturist for many reasons, but perhaps the one I appreciate most
is not lieing around in a wet swimming costume after a swim. What do other
forum members cite as their main reason?

That is basically the reason that I put forward except that I usually
say "... wet, sandy or both ...". I then go on to express views on the
comfort or otherwise of swim wear in a sauna.

I could not subscribe to the idea that we should be ashamed of our bodies
and did not want to raise a family in such a way.

I think I was always a naturist, & I often took all my clothes off
when alone even as a child (indoors & outdoors). But it was only at
the age of 22 (in 1985) that I started stripping off in the company of
others. I'd only recently moved to the coast, & I was taking my mum's
dog for a walk when I stumbled upon a naturist beach. I was
embarassed & quickly fled, but curiosity got the better of me & I
returned a couple of weeks later. I've been a naturuist ever since.

I don't class myself as a gardener - I just prefer to keep my garden looking
tidy. I don't class myself as a chef - I just prefer not to go hungry.
Likewise I don't class myself as a naturist - I just prefer not to have to
wear clothes!

When I disclosed to a friend that I never bothered to dress around the house
and garden unless I had to, he innocently asked me if I'd ever considered
being a naturist!!

Because when i was eight I had an Aunty who knitted everything I wore
and she even knitted me wollen swim shorts which when wet could adsorb
300 times their weight in sea water.
One day I got so fed up with them and my parents would not buy me a
decent pair of speedos that I stripped naked there and then on
Southend beach and spent the rest of the day playing in the sand stark
naked.
Well not quite the rest of the day..maybe 20 minutes until I got
arrested as I was 26 at the time.

But would you describe yourself as a "non-gardener" or a "non-cook"? ("chef"
implies a professional)

So how does one go about becoming a "naturist"?

AIUI the majority of "naturists" have never even heard of BN, let alone have
an opinion about it!

Ahhhh But those "naturists" who have never heard of BN are obviously not
"real" naturists :-)

Is this something like the world of bird-watching, where there are
"ornithologists", "twitchers", "birders" and "bird-watchers", each term
implying a different degree of enthusiasm and/or expertise?.

We could have "real naturists", "naturists", "nudists" and "people who
engage in naked recreation but don't call themselves naturists".

David.

This is exactly that. Those that say " I don't like a label" or " I
don't want/accept labels" forget that it's not the item that gets to
choose if or what the label is going to be. so you become a
naturist/nudist/pervert/deviant when those around you decide that's what
you are, and no matter how much you scream " I don't like labels" you
have just been labeled. Society has a deep seated need to create labels
otherwise there is no way of differentiating us from "them".

Because it just felt right in a way that nothing before had done.

My wife & i became `naturists` almost by accident in Corfu. We always
wander away from the main beach, found what we thought was a quiet
deserted stretch (8am ) but by 10am about a dozen people had turned
up & all had stripped off. I looked at my wife & said "i will if you
will" & we`ve been naturists ever since, Even tho my wife has since
had a mastectomy it hasn`t stopped her, tho she will don her sarong
when walking around. No `body shame` from my wife, but i do get
frosty when people stare. You don`t have to look like Pammy Anderson
or Brad Pitt to be a naturist. (thankfully) Hamish

For me, add to that

I find it very relaxing

also
I like to make a statement that body shame is ridiculous and
It's my opportunity to be a rebel against society, without causing any harm
