Hi,
I've just written out a huge report and tried to post only to watch it fail (and lose all my typing) hence the earlier Test-Ignore message. (I'll cut and paste a copy this time before posting). Anyway I'll try again. I know its been a pretty bad day down south with most of you unable to get out and about but thankfully up here in Aberdeenshire we had some glorious weather. I decided to head out and do a small walk (couple of hours) up a hill called Meikle Tap, http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.sr...587&z=3&dn=598 &tl=TP4759+-+Meikle+Tap I parked my car just past Wester Tillyshogle on the B977 and headed up the path through the trees in a straight line for the sumit. Once up the path a few hundred yards I stripped off and continued my walk through the fern laden trees. I started the climb upwards and soon came out of the trees into the open and enjoyed the wonderful views across Aberdeenshire and Royal Deeside. There's no marked path on the maps but its well trodden and easy to follow up to the knoll and onwards to the sumit. The summit has a trig point and also some form of transmitter/relay mast. When I reached the sumit I stopped for some refreshments and watched a couple of hawks come up from the trees below, circle around the transmitter, then catch some thermals quickly gaining height before I lost them from view. The path back down from the summit is clearly marked on the map and is an easy going decent on a good path. Where the path down from the summit joins up, there's another path that heads in a semi cirlcular route through the trees, this path is very peaceful and quiet, just walking down it makes all your worries melt away as you blend back in with nature. Where the path rejoins the main route there's a secluded weir 20 yards off the path, and an excellent sun trap. I stopped in there for another quick break but was joined by a black lab who jumped in for a swim, thankfully I put on my shorts at this point and no sooner had I done that a family appeared through the trees and ferns looking for their dog, who was hapily splashing about in the cool water. From the weir its about a 30-45 minute walk back to the car through open trees and ferns, the path does get quite uncomfortable as the forestry commision have put down large stone chippings to allow their vehicles access, but you can go down the side easily. I was able to get back to within 50 yards of my car before having to get dressed and head for home. I've done a few local hills and mountains and will hopefully post a few more descriptions like this in the future. I've also come across a very good website while looking for others who've posted experiences of the scottish hills, www.nakedmunros.com give them a visit and leave your support on their guestbook. Hopefully I'll meet them or some of you on the hills soon. The link worked for me - this is a very neat and professional personal site.
I've done this myself and with friends in my younger and fitter days. I hope it catches on - let's all give the idea a bit of publicity.
